Frequently asked questions

Automatically. Each contact has their folder in the Clients folder of the Documents page, created with the contact and named after them. With the first documents a client sends you, meo creates a folder named after the request inside their folder and files each document there.

If the request has several people, all the documents go into the folder of one of them, see In which person’s file are a request’s documents filed? To find them, see Find received documents.

What permissions can you give on a shared folder?

Section titled “What permissions can you give on a shared folder?”

Two levels. Read only: the person views and downloads the files, without being able to change them. Edit: they can also add and delete files, and create folders. For an accountant who needs to upload documents for you, choose Edit.

Every share has an expiration date, 90 days at most. To change the level, open Shares, then the share’s ⋮ menu, and click Change to Viewer or Change to Editor. See Share documents with a third party.

Yes. The Documents page accepts every type of file, up to 50 GB per file, in the folders you create. You can move your existing folders into it with their subfolders. Your documents are hosted in Montréal, Canada. The total space depends on your plan.

See Organise your documents with your own folders and Move your existing folders into meo.

Do you keep access to the documents once the request is closed for your client?

Section titled “Do you keep access to the documents once the request is closed for your client?”

Yes. Closing the collection only stops your client from sending or signing anything. The documents received stay in the request and in the client’s folder, and your team opens them as before.

They stay until you delete them. If your space deletes expired documents automatically, a document goes to the Trash at the end of its retention period, and you can restore it for 30 days. See Find received documents.

What is the difference between a request and a shared folder?

Section titled “What is the difference between a request and a shared folder?”

A request is for getting something from your client: documents, answers, a statement or a signature, with a due date and reminders. It can also hand documents to them. What they send is filed in their folder.

A shared folder gives a person access to an existing folder, Read only or with Edit, for 90 days at most. It has no due date and no reminders. It suits a third party, such as a client’s accountant, who views or uploads files freely. See Share documents with a third party and Deliver documents to your client.

Why can you not share the folder of a request in progress?

Section titled “Why can you not share the folder of a request in progress?”

Because meo manages that folder while the request is in progress: it files what your client sends there. Its menu says “An active request uses this folder”, and the folder cannot be shared, moved or deleted.

Once the request is completed or cancelled, it becomes an ordinary folder that you can share. To share right away, create another folder inside the client’s folder, copy the documents into it with Copy, then share that folder. See Share documents with a third party.

Yes, for each document you ask for. In the document’s definition, the Accepted files section offers Images, PDF, Word, Excel, Video, Other or All files, and the Maximum size per file: Standard (up to 100 MB) or Extra large (up to 25 GB). Your client can only upload the formats you ticked.

To change a document in your catalogue, see Edit a catalogue item. This setting applies to your clients’ uploads: your team uploads every type of file in Documents.

Can you edit a Word document directly in meo?

Section titled “Can you edit a Word document directly in meo?”

No. meo keeps your files and previews PDFs, images, videos and audio files, but does not edit any file. For a Word document, the preview says “No preview available” and offers Download.

Download the document, edit it on your computer, then upload the new version to the same folder.

No. In Documents, click New at the top of the left menu, then Upload a file, or drag your files onto the page. They go into the open folder.

To tie a file to a client, upload it in the Documents tab of their contact page: it is filed in their folder. The Clients folder itself does not accept files. See Organise your documents with your own folders.

It depends on the path:

  • In Documents, each file you upload can be up to 50 GB, up to 1,000 files at a time.
  • In a request, each document accepts up to 100 MB per file or, with Extra large, up to 25 GB, depending on its setting.
  • A handout is a PDF of up to 50 MB or an image of up to 10 MB.
  • To download several documents at once, meo prepares a ZIP file of at most 10 GB or 10,000 files.

The total storage space depends on your plan.

Where do you find the ZIP file when you download several documents?

Section titled “Where do you find the ZIP file when you download several documents?”

At the top of the screen, under the Download ready button. When you download a folder or several files at once, meo prepares a ZIP file in the background: the Preparation started notice appears, and you can keep working.

When the ZIP is ready, click Download ready, then Download. The ZIP stays available for 7 days, then it is deleted; your documents stay where they are. Dismiss removes it from the list, and the bin icon deletes it.

Only you see your ZIP files, in the space where you prepared them. A ZIP holds 10 GB or 10,000 files at most; a single file downloads directly, without a ZIP.
