Frequently asked questions

Are meo’s electronic signatures legally valid?

Section titled “Are meo’s electronic signatures legally valid?”

Yes. Canadian law recognises electronic signatures. In Quebec, an electronic signature has the same value as a handwritten one when the document stays intact and the link between the signature and the document is maintained.

meo keeps the evidence. Each person first accepts the Electronic Signature Terms. meo then seals and timestamps the signed document: any change would break the seal. The Signature certificate dates each step.

Some documents are exceptions, such as a holograph will or a notarial deed. See Legal value and verification of a signature.

Yes. Add a Signature document to a request: you upload a PDF and place each person’s fields, such as the signature, the initials or the date. The same request can also ask for documents and answers to questions.

The person signs online from their link, without creating an account. They adopt their signature by drawing it, selecting a handwriting style or uploading an image, then click Finish. See Prepare a document for signature.

Where do you find the signature certificate of a signed document?

Section titled “Where do you find the signature certificate of a signed document?”

In the signed document’s details. In Documents, open the client’s folder, then the ”… - signé.pdf” file. Click File details, the i icon at the top of the preview: the Signature section shows the evidence and the View the signature certificate link.

You can also open the file’s ⋮ menu, point to Download and choose Signature certificate, or Signed copy with certificate to get everything in one file. Your client finds the same choices under Download, in their portal. The certificate is a file separate from the signed document; see what it contains.

Are electronic signatures included in your plan?

Section titled “Are electronic signatures included in your plan?”

Yes, in every plan, with no fee per signature. meo’s plans vary with the number of users, the number of spaces and the storage, never with the number of signature documents.

What should you do if a second signer cannot sign?

Section titled “What should you do if a second signer cannot sign?”

First check the signing order. If the request has people sign One after the other, the second person can sign only after the first: their portal shows “Waiting for” followed by a name. They receive an email as soon as it is their turn.

If it is their turn, check that their email address is correct. Then open the request, click Options, Remind, then Send reminder: each person who still has something to sign receives a reminder. You can also click Share to copy their link and pass it on to them. See Have a document signed by several people.

Does a statement accepted by your client hold up as evidence?

Section titled “Does a statement accepted by your client hold up as evidence?”

Yes: meo keeps the evidence of your client’s answer. The answer is recorded from a verified client session, with the date, the version of the text and its SHA-256 fingerprint. Neither the text nor the answer can be changed after submission. Click the statement’s row in the request and open Proof and activity.

A statement is not a signature: no PDF is sealed and no signature certificate is produced. When a document must be signed, use a Signature document. See Have your client accept terms without signing.

Does each signer need their own email address?

Section titled “Does each signer need their own email address?”

Yes. Each person who signs needs an email address, and two people on the same request cannot have the same one: meo shows “A person with this email is already in the request”. The signing link and the copy of the signed document are sent to that address.

Do signers receive a copy of the signed document?

Section titled “Do signers receive a copy of the signed document?”

Yes. Once everyone has signed, meo seals the document and sends each signer a “Signed copy” email, with the signed PDF attached. The document also stays in their portal: they can download or print it, alone or with its certificate. You have nothing to pass on.

On your side, the signed document is filed in the client’s folder, under the name ”… - signé.pdf”.

By their personal link and a one-time code. They open their link, choose to receive the code By email or By text message, then enter it. Text message is offered when their contact record has a phone number. Before seeing the document, they accept the Electronic Signature Terms once per request.

The code shows the person has access to that email address or phone number; meo does not check identity documents. For each signer, the Signature certificate shows the authentication method, where the code was sent, the IP address, the consent, the signature mode and the time of each step. See what meo does not do.

Does Adobe Acrobat recognise a signature made in meo?

Section titled “Does Adobe Acrobat recognise a signature made in meo?”

Yes. meo’s seal is issued by SSL.com, a certificate authority on Adobe’s Approved Trust List (AATL): Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader recognise it as valid, with no set-up by the person who opens the file. The seal is applied once per file, hence a single signature in Acrobat; the signers’ names appear in the Signature certificate.

If Acrobat shows the validity as “unknown” instead, it could not confirm the seal’s certificate on that computer: it does not mean the document was changed. Open the signatures panel, then the properties: one line says whether the document has changed since signing. See Verify the seal in Adobe Acrobat.

Can you have a notarial deed signed in meo?

Section titled “Can you have a notarial deed signed in meo?”

No. The notarial deed follows your usual process, outside meo, as does a will, which follows strict rules of form that vary by province. In Quebec, a holograph will is written in full and signed by hand (Civil Code, art. 726), and a notarial will follows your notary’s process. meo’s electronic signature is for preparatory documents, for example a statement, an authorization or a service agreement. For a will, follow the guidance of your notary or lawyer. See documents that are exceptions.

Can a health questionnaire be dated and signed in meo?

Section titled “Can a health questionnaire be dated and signed in meo?”

Yes, in two ways:

  • As a PDF: add your questionnaire as a Signature document. Place Text and Checkbox fields for the answers, then a Signature field and a Signing date field. Your patient fills it in and signs online; the date of the day fills in by itself.
  • Online: ask the questions in an Information block, then add a Statement in which your patient attests their answers. meo keeps the date of each answer.

See Prepare a document for signature.
